Is the TECHING DM229 Gas Powered?

The TECHING DM229 is not gas powered. It runs on a 3.7 V 300 mAh rechargeable lithium battery driving a small electric motor. There is no fuel tank, carburetor, spark plug, or exhaust system. A full charge takes about 2 hours and gives roughly 30 minutes of continuous operation.

Most people who ask this have already seen the model, and that is exactly why they ask. The DM229 has an open frame, a rear-mounted engine with visible cylinders, pistons moving through their stroke, valves timing against them, and a drive chain running back to the rear wheels. Nothing is hidden behind a body shell. It looks like a machine that ought to burn something.

If you were hoping it did, here is what the model actually delivers, and why builders who came looking for a gasoline engine tend to keep it anyway.

1. It runs like the real thing

This is not a static display piece, and it is nothing like the models that hide a motor in the rear axle and wag a dummy piston for effect. All 430+ CNC-machined aluminium and zinc alloy parts are doing the job their shapes imply. The TECHING DM229 recreates as much of the original as a model this size can. It is not gasoline powered, but everything else is built so that you assemble a genuinely working metal model kit of the world’s first automobile with your own hands.

Flip the switch and the engine starts turning and keeps turning. Set the car down on a desk or on the floor and it drives forward on its own.

2. The details are faithful enough to feel the history

Push the lever on the side forward and drive engages. Pull it back and the model sits in neutral with the engine still turning. Two positions, no gear selection, no reverse. That is not a simplification: the 1886 Benz worked exactly this way, engaging drive by moving a belt from a loose pulley onto a fixed one, with no reverse gear at all. If you wanted to turn the real car around, you got out and pushed it.

Three wheels, a single front wheel that steers and takes no power, engine and drivetrain hung out at the back turning the two large rear wheels. Builders new to the model sometimes assume the undriven front wheel is a transmission fault. It is not. The 1886 Benz was a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive tricycle and the DM229 reproduces that layout exactly: the rear wheels are the drive wheels that push the car forward, while the front wheel steers and free-rolls, nothing more. Engine and drive wheels sit on one continuous mechanical chain, so they cannot move independently. The pistons stroke because the car is driving, and the car drives because the crank is turning.

3. Everything needed to build it is in the box

Plastic model kits of the same subject arrive unassembled and unpainted, and need glue, enamel paint and sprue cutters bought separately. The DM229 is metal throughout and bolts together with hex keys, spanners and tweezers, all supplied along with an illustrated manual. Why is there still no gas-powered model of the world’s first car?

Not a single manufacturer makes one, and the reason is mechanical rather than commercial. A miniature four-stroke engine needs thousands of rpm just to keep running, while the 1886 Benz it is modelled on turned slowly enough that you could watch the flywheel go round. Closing that gap takes a clutch and several stages of reduction gearing — an assembly physically larger than everything you can currently see moving on the DM229. The exposed mechanism is the whole point of this model, and a gearbox that size would bury it.

Then there is the heat of a running engine against an anodised alloy frame, a fuel tank and exhaust with nowhere to hide on an open 1886 chassis, and a carburetor that needs tuning every time you want to see the car move.

If you want real combustion: the Retrol R18

One machine does get you there, from the same 1886 subject. The Retrol R18 is a genuine internal-combustion engine built in the three-wheeler configuration of the original car. It runs on 95-octane gasoline with 4.5 V spark ignition from three AA batteries, and runs 10 to 20 minutes on a tank.

Two things to know before you consider it. It arrives fully assembled on a wooden base, so there is nothing to build — you add fuel and start it. And it does not travel: the R18 is an engine to start, run and watch, not a car that drives across a table. It is also the larger of the two products and cannot be fitted into a DM229.

Common questions

Does the DM229 need gasoline or any kind of fuel?

No. It runs entirely on its rechargeable lithium battery. There is no fuel tank, carburetor, spark plug, or exhaust system anywhere in the model.

Does the DM229 actually drive, or is it a display model?

It drives. Set the finished model down on a desk or the floor, flip the switch, and it moves forward under its own power at about 1 mph while the engine runs. It also displays well standing still, but it is a working car model kit rather than a static replica.

Are the pistons actually doing work, or just being moved?

They are being moved. The motor turns the crankshaft, which drives the connecting rods and pistons, with the valves timed correctly against them. The mechanism and the sequence are genuine, but there is no combustion in the cylinder and the engine produces no power of its own.

Does it have gears or a reverse?

No. The lever on the side is a clutch with two positions, forward drive and neutral. There is no reverse and no gear selection, because the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen had neither.

Why doesn't the front wheel drive?

Because the original didn't. The 1886 Benz used a single front wheel purely for steering, with power going to the two rear wheels. The DM229 reproduces that layout, so a front wheel that turns freely is correct, not a defect.

Can the DM229 be converted to run on fuel?

No. The cylinder is not built for combustion, and there is no ignition, fuel delivery, cooling or exhaust provision anywhere in the design. Attempting a conversion would destroy the model without producing a running engine.
