Starter Kit & Base Upgrade: What Changed for TOYAN V8, FS-L400BGC and SEMTO ST-NF2 Owners | Stirlingkit

Are you tired of guessing which wire goes where?

Tired of finishing a beautiful build, opening the accessory box, and finding a set of leads with no labels and no obvious order?

Tired of pausing a YouTube video at 0.25 speed, zooming in on somebody else's workbench, and hoping their setup matches yours?

Tired of not knowing which lead goes to the ignition module and which goes to the battery — or what happens if you get it backwards?

Tired of buying a second base, and a third, because every engine you own needs its own?

Tired of a finished engine that still looks half-built, because the wiring and the fuel tank ended up wherever they'd fit?

Tired of leaving a finished engine sitting on the bench overnight, because you'd rather wait than risk connecting something wrong?

"The engine went together fine. Then I opened the starter kit and had no idea which wire went where."

Over the years, a lot of our builders have told us the same thing:

  • The connections were the wall. Working out which line went where was harder than building the engine itself.
  • A base for every engine. Own three engines, buy three bases — even though they were doing the same job.
  • Parts that all looked alike. Nothing on the components told you what they were or where they belonged.
  • No obvious first step. Even builders who knew engines couldn't tell what to connect first, or what "finished" was supposed to look like.
  • Mounting by trial and error. Getting the engine and the ignition hardware to sit correctly on the base took fiddling that shouldn't have been part of the job.
  • Beginners paid the most. Experienced builders eventually worked it out. First-time builders stalled — sometimes for weeks, sometimes for good.

There are official wiring diagrams, and they're accurate. But a diagram only helps if you can already tell one lead from another — and for a first-time builder, matching the drawing to the parts in front of you is genuinely hard. So we started asking ourselves a question: could there be a starter kit built for beginners instead of for people who already know the platform?

We want people new to this hobby to get their first engine running — not to give up at the last step because of a handful of wires.

We put that proposal to TOYAN. They listened.

What we did about it

We asked TOYAN to change something. They did.

Stirlingkit doesn't manufacture these engines. But we're the ones reading your emails, so we're the ones who knew where the problem was — and we kept saying it: the engine is excellent, and the accessories are where first-time builders get stuck.

Let's be clear about what that does and doesn't mean.

The previous starter kits were not broken. If you've built model engines before, you already knew how to connect them and get the engine running, and you probably didn't think twice about it. Those kits worked, and they still work. Nothing about this upgrade says otherwise.

What it says is that they were designed for people who already knew the platform. If you didn't, the same set of parts was a wall. That's the only thing we asked TOYAN to change.

And that took time. Changing a production part isn't a decision, it's a process — design, tooling, samples, and then real testing to confirm the new version starts and runs exactly as reliably as the one it replaces. We weren't willing to trade reliability for convenience, and neither were they. That's why this took as long as it did.

It's also not the first time. The SEMTO starter kit further down this page is now in its third generation — each version a response to what builders said was awkward about the one before it. This is simply the round where it came together.

Two things came out of it: make the connections obvious, and stop making people buy a new base for every engine. Not cheaper. Not more powerful. Just clearer, for the person opening the box for the first time.

It's done. The upgraded starter kits and bases are now in stock.

The standard we set was simple: it should feel like unboxing a new phone. Nobody hands you a wiring diagram with a phone. You take it out, you can tell what everything is, you plug it in, it works. Same performance, same compatibility, same engines — a much shorter distance between "package arrived" and "engine running."

Old vs new

The wiring is the whole story

Everything else in this update matters, but this is the change you'll feel first — assuming this is your first engine. If it isn't, you may not notice much difference at all, and that's fine.

Before: the diagram was accurate, but it couldn't tell you which lead in your hand was which. Experienced builders filled in that gap from memory. Everyone else compared parts against a video frame, guessed, checked, second-guessed, and often left the engine sitting on the bench overnight rather than risk connecting something wrong. For a lot of first-time builders, that was where the project quietly ended.

Now: the base tells you. Each connection point is labelled on the base itself — START, POWER, IGNITER — and the fuel tank, battery and wiring have fixed positions built in. You match the label to the lead and follow the instructions. The diagram becomes a reference you can check, not a puzzle you have to solve.

Same engine, same performance, same compatibility, same reliability. What changed is who can get to a running engine without help.

  Previous version Upgraded version
Identifying parts Similar-looking components, easy to mix up Connection points labelled on the base: START, POWER, IGNITER
Wiring & connections Clear if you knew the platform. Guesswork if you didn't Match the lead to the label and follow the instructions
Reliability Proven Unchanged — tested to start and run the same way
Bases you need One base per engine One base covers the inline-4 and the V8
Mounting Aligning engine and ignition hardware took fiddling Pre-machined holes; fixed positions for fuel tank, battery and wiring
First start Straightforward for experienced builders; often a second session for everyone else Realistic to reach the same day you unbox, first engine or fifth
On display Loose wiring and improvised placement Everything routed and located — presentable on a desk or in a cabinet
Suits Builders who already knew the platform First-time builders and experienced builders alike
What it costs you Nothing extra. The upgraded SEMTO and TOYAN V8 starter kits are listed at or below the price of the versions they replace. This was not a price increase.
What's upgraded

Four products, and how to order the right version

Every order placed from 18 August 2026 onwards ships the upgraded version. Nothing to select, nothing to check at checkout — the previous versions are out of stock and no longer available.

Base · Inline-4 & V8

Aluminium alloy base — one base, two engines

This one started as a question we put to the factory on your behalf: why should a customer buy a separate base for every engine they own? A base holds an engine steady. The engines are different sizes, but the job is identical. Owning three engines shouldn't mean owning three bases.

It took a while to get agreement. We got there. The upgraded base is shared between the TOYAN FS-L400BGC inline-4 and the TOYAN V8 — one part, two engines. If you own both, or plan to, you buy it once.

The mounting holes for the ignition accessories are pre-machined as well, so the engine and the electronics sit where they belong without improvising.

And this is where the guesswork went away. Each connection point is labelled directly on the base — START, POWER, IGNITER — and the fuel tank, battery and wiring all have fixed, purpose-made positions. You follow the labels, and that's the job. There's nothing left to work out.

The side effect is that a finished build now looks finished: everything routed, nothing hanging loose. Good for a first engine, and good for a desk or a display cabinet where people are going to ask about it.

Starter kit · V8

Starter kit — TOYAN V8 FS-V800WGPC

The complete starting package for the gasoline V8: spark plugs, CDI ignition modules, fuel tank and line, water tank and line, three-way nozzle and radiator support hardware — reworked so setting it up doesn't require reverse-engineering somebody else's photo.

Base · Twin-cylinder

Metal fixing base — SEMTO ST-NF2 and TOYAN FS-L200

Same thinking applied to the twin-cylinder: one base covering the SEMTO ST-NF2 and the TOYAN FS-L200. Holds the engine steady while it's running, and looks right on a desk when it isn't.

Starter kit · Twin-cylinder

Starter kit — SEMTO ST-NF2 (nitro/methanol)

The ST-NF2 is the engine most likely to be somebody's first engine, which made this the most important kit to get right. It's also the clearest example of what we mean about pricing: the upgraded version lists below the standard version it replaces.

This is the third generation of this kit. Each version has been a response to what builders told us was awkward about the one before it — and the difference between the first and the current one is the whole argument of this article in a single picture.

Starter kit · Inline-4

Starter kit — TOYAN FS-L400BGC

The inline-4 starter kit needs no upgrade. The current 4-in-1 igniter kit is the right one to buy — in stock, and fully supported.

Fuel options

Running your SEMTO ST-NF2 on gasoline

This question comes in often enough to answer directly. If you own the nitro/methanol ST-NF2 and you want gasoline, there are two routes.

Convert the engine you already own

The gas conversion kit does exactly that, and it's available now.

Or wait for the factory gasoline version

A gasoline twin-cylinder is planned for release around September–October. The exact date isn't locked, and we'd rather tell you that than promise a day we can't hold. Release news will appear first on the engine listing below — where the nitro version is also in stock and shipping now.

Questions

Common questions

I already own the old starter kit or base. Do I need to buy the new one?

No. Nothing you own has stopped working, and we continue to support it. This upgrade is about the first setup — if you're past that point and your engine runs, you're not missing anything.

How do I make sure I receive the upgraded version?

You don't have to do anything. Every order placed from 18 August 2026 onwards ships the upgraded version. The previous versions are out of stock and no longer available to buy. If you ordered before that date and aren't sure which version you received, email us your order number and we'll check it for you.

The FS-L400BGC base and the V8 base look identical. Are they the same part?

Yes — one base, two listings, so builders searching for either engine can find it. If you already own it for one engine, you don't need a second one for the other.

Is the upgraded version more expensive?

Not for the starter kits. Both the SEMTO and TOYAN V8 upgraded starter kits list at or below the versions they replace. Current pricing is always on the product pages.

I'm stuck partway through a build. Can you help?

Yes, we're happy to help. Email service@stirlingkit.com and let us know which kit you have — a photo of where you've got to is very helpful, and usually means we can answer you straight away.
