Things You Must Know Before Installing the P51 Pulley on Lister D & B01 Models

1. Is this issue common on all engines?

The OKMO P51 friction clutch pulley is designed to fit a wide range of OKMO miniature engine models. Most compatible models will not encounter this front starter blockage. However, due to the unique structural layout of specific models like the Lister D and B01, installing the P51 pulley will cover the front starting area.

2. Why is the starter dog covered on Lister D and B01?

When you install the P51 pulley on a Lister D or B01 model, it replaces the factory flywheel and integrates a manual clutch system. Because of the pulley's enclosed structure, the front starter dog / starting shaft hole will be covered. This is completely normal and expected for these specific engine modifications.

3. How to start your engine after the upgrade?

Since the front starter dog is blocked by the pulley mechanism, you can switch to alternative starting methods depending on your model:

  • For Lister D: You can easily start the engine from the opposite side using an electric drill starter, cranking tool, or a manual pull-rope on the protruding metal shaft.
  • For B01: Starting from the opposite side requires an additional accessory component (an optional extra part available for separate purchase if needed).

💡 How It Works, Pro Tips & Setup Inspiration

4. How the P51 Clutch Works & Mini Power Generation Scene

  • The Working Principle: The P51 features a built-in friction clutch mechanism. Turning the manual handwheel adjusts the internal friction plates—loosening them disengages the power (neutral mode to cut off output), while tightening them engages the drive (transmitting power smoothly).
  • Level Up Your Play (Generator Combo): You can pair your P51-equipped engine with a miniature generator and streetlight model. Use a transmission belt to link them: start load-free, then engage the clutch to drive the generator and illuminate the vintage streetlamp!

5. Pro Installation & Tuning Tips

  • Always Start in Neutral (Disengaged): Always keep the P51 clutch in the disengaged state when starting your engine. This eliminates all load resistance from external accessories, ensuring smooth, effortless ignition.
  • Belt Tension & Alignment: Adjust the belt tension between the P51 pulley and your driven components while the clutch is disengaged to prevent excessive friction or belt slip.
  • Workbench Tuning & Idle Check: When fine-tuning your engine on the workbench or checking idle stability, disengage the clutch to safely isolate the engine from any attached external loads.
  • Watch Your Rotation Direction: Keep track of the engine's rotation direction to ensure correct electrical polarity when driving lighting or generator components.

🚀 Exciting Future Upgrades & Important Notice

  • Why we generally do not recommend it for Lister D & B01: Because the P51 pulley completely covers the front starting area, trying to force-start these specific models without the correct alternative startup method can easily cause excessive resistance and shear the internal starting pins or damage internal components. Therefore, unless you are fully prepared for alternative startup techniques on your workbench, we generally do not recommend installing this accessory directly on Lister D or B01 models. If you still choose to do so, please make sure to read through this blog and all setup precautions carefully first!
  • Future B01 Starting Accessory: We are developing an alternative starting solution for the B01 engine via the other flywheel, which will require an extra accessory available for separate purchase (release date to be announced).
