Static — The Desk Piece

Leave the three drive belts off and the GF-01 sits as a clean, sculptural machine-shop scene for your desk, shelf, or office. Builder's tip: tape the belts under the base so they're ready the day you decide to upgrade.

Running — The Living Workshop

Loop the belts, connect a steam engine, and the scene becomes hypnotic: pulleys turning, stones spinning, the lamp glowing over it all. More entertaining than whatever's on TV.

Let a Real Steam Engine Run Your Shop

The RETROL SE-03 mill steam engine carries a matching drive pulley on its flywheel — designed from day one to power the GF-01. Fire the boiler, tension the belts, and watch steam pressure become spinning stones, a turning drill, and a glowing lamp. It also pairs with the SE-01, SE-02, and other RETROL steam engine models.

Builder's Notes

Read These Before You Start

⚠️ Steering rod — hand-tighten only
The steering rod comes pre-installed and properly positioned at the factory. When fitting the steering wheel, tighten slowly by hand until secure — no tools, no extra torque. Over-tightening can break the rod threads. If you feel real resistance, stop and check alignment. Questions? Contact service@stirlingkit.com first.
Install the battery holder before anything else
Locate and mount the battery holder under the base before attaching the machines on top. Doing it later means laying the finished model on its side and putting pressure on the components — avoidable with this one step.
Keep the brass rails flat when tightening
Assemble the uprights and brass hex rods loosely first. Rotate each hex rod so its screw holes sit vertical, press the assembly down flat to the base, then tighten the end screws. This keeps the brass from bowing. Short screws go at the ends, long screws in the middle.
Align the belts before locking the pulleys
The upper shaft has no flats to index the pulleys, so don't commit the set screws until the belts run parallel to each other and square to the shaft. Oscillate the shaft gently while snugging each set screw, and don't over-torque — light pressure is enough and won't mar the shaft.
Two Allen keys make the cross rod easy
For the center support rod, come in with an Allen key from each end and tighten in opposing directions. The rod stays put and locks down rock solid.
Fit the pulley grub screws early
The set screws for the pulleys are easiest to keep track of if you install them in the pulleys at the start, before the pulleys go on their shafts.

Common Questions

Does the drill press really work?
Yes. It's a functional 3-speed drill press with step pulleys, capable of drilling tiny holes in soft materials with the included 1.5 mm bit. Spindle travel is approximately 6 mm — it's a working miniature, not a production tool.
Do I need a steam engine to enjoy it?
No. The GF-01 is a complete display model on its own — the lamp runs on AA batteries, and the mechanism turns freely by hand. The steam engine connection is the upgrade path, not a requirement. Many owners display it static first (belts off) and add an engine later.
Is any machining or drilling required to build it?
None. This is a bolt-together assembly kit — every part arrives CNC-machined and finished. If you can use a screwdriver and an Allen key, you can build the GF-01.
How long does assembly take?
Most builders finish in one relaxed evening. The illustrated instructions keep each step to a small number of parts.
Which steam engines can drive it?
The RETROL SE-03 is the designed-for match — its flywheel carries a drive pulley for the GF-01's belts. The SE-01, SE-02, and other steam engine models with a compatible pulley also work.
How fast will it arrive?
