Ready to ride again
The inventor and the woman who proved him right
In 1886, Karl Benz built the world's first automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. In 1888, his wife Bertha Benz took it on the first long-distance drive in history, showing the world what the automobile could do.
This pair is made for the TECHING DM229. Instead of stiff, flat paint, every figure is painted by hand with separate colors and finishes, and the clothing follows the cut and colors of the late 1880s. From the watch chain on Karl's waistcoat to the bonnet Bertha wore for the open road, the details bring that moment in history onto your shelf.
Father of the Automobile · Classic Victorian Gentleman
- True to the era: 1880s gentleman's formal dress, with a tall silk top hat and a classic cravat.
- Expressive sculpt: inspired by Karl Benz in his middle years, with his trimmed mustache and calm, steady gaze.
- Layered paint finish: a navy coat with a wool-like finish over a plum waistcoat, and a metallic watch chain, so nothing looks like plain plastic.
- Made for the DM229: a seated pose with hands and legs placed naturally to sit on the DM229 bench.
Automotive Pioneer · The First Long-Distance Drive
- Dressed for the journey: practical travelling clothes inspired by her 1888 drive, the first long-distance trip by automobile.
- Tie-on travelling bonnet: a white bonnet tied under the chin, worn against wind and dust on an open-top car.
- Tailored navy suit: high collar, buttoned front and fitted waist, both elegant and practical.
- Natural folds: a long straight skirt falling over the bench, with gloves and laced ankle boots for the road.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will my figures ship?
The design has just been confirmed and the set is now in production. We currently estimate shipping in late November. You can follow each step in the Production Progress tracker on this page, and you will receive a tracking number by email as soon as your order leaves our warehouse.
How do I get the launch price?
Use code 1886 at checkout to get the Gentleman & Lady set for $44.98. The "Pre-order Now" button at the top adds the set to your cart with the code already applied. The Super Early Bird price ends Oct 25, 11:59 PM ET. The code applies to the pair only.
Are the photos the final product?
The images are 3D renders of the confirmed design. The final figures are molded in resin and painted by hand, so colors and small details may vary slightly from piece to piece. We will add photos of the finished figures as soon as they are ready.
How is this set different from the Victorian Lady & Gentleman Set?
Both fit the DM229, and both are molded in resin and painted by hand. The difference is the design: this set is sculpted for realism, with lifelike faces and travelling clothes researched from the 1880s. The Victorian Lady & Gentleman Set is a more stylized, elegant pair in formal Victorian dress. Choose the look you like best.
Do the figures come with the TECHING DM229 model?
No. This listing is for the driver and passenger figures only. The TECHING DM229 model kit is sold separately.
Do the figures' feet touch the floorboard?
Their feet rest just above the floorboard. The DM229's bench is compact: figures large enough to reach the floor would need to be about twice the size, and then only one would fit on the seat. To keep two figures side by side with natural, lifelike proportions, they are made at the current size.
Will the figures fit other models?
They are designed specifically for the seat of the TECHING DM229.
Does the set come in a gift box?
Yes. Each set ships in a custom gift box with foam padding inside, ready to give as a present.
