Starter Kit & Base Upgrade: What Changed for TOYAN V8, FS-L400BGC and SEMTO ST-NF2 Owners | Stirlingkit
The problem

You finished the engine. Then you opened the starter kit.

The build went fine. Hours of it — careful, satisfying, exactly what you paid for. Then you opened the box with the electronics in it, and everything stopped.

A handful of similar-looking modules. Wires with no obvious home. A fuel line, a water line, and no way to tell from the parts themselves which one was which.

The wiring was where almost everyone got stuck. Which lead goes to the ignition module and which goes to the battery. Whether that connector belongs to the glow plug or the starter. What plugs into what, in what order, and what happens if you get it backwards. Nothing in the box answered any of it. So the last step of a beautiful build turned into a browser tab: find a video, pause it, zoom in on somebody else's bench, and hope their setup matched yours.

"The engine went together fine. Then I opened the starter kit and had no idea which wire went where."

We've read some version of that message hundreds of times — in emails, in reviews, in Facebook group posts that weren't always polite. And the pattern was always the same:

  • The connections were the wall. Working out which line went where was harder than building the engine itself.
  • Parts that all looked alike. Nothing on the components told you what they were or where they belonged.
  • No obvious first step. Even builders who knew engines couldn't tell what to connect first, or what "finished" was supposed to look like.
  • Mounting by trial and error. Getting the engine and the ignition hardware to sit correctly on the base took fiddling that shouldn't have been part of the job.
  • Beginners paid the most. Experienced builders eventually worked it out. First-time builders stalled — sometimes for weeks, sometimes for good.

People weren't failing at engineering. They were failing at a packaging and design problem we'd handed them.

What we did about it

We took it back to the factory. Repeatedly.

Stirlingkit doesn't manufacture these engines — but we're the ones reading your emails, so we're the ones who knew. For a long time now we've been having the same conversation with the TOYAN engineering team, and later with our other engine partners: the engine is excellent, the first-start experience isn't, and the accessories are where it breaks.

That conversation wasn't a single meeting. It was your feedback, translated, argued for, and brought back again — asking whether the starter kits and bases could be built differently. Not cheaper. Not more powerful. Just clearer, for the person opening the box for the first time.

It's done. The upgraded starter kits and bases are now in stock.

The standard we set was simple: it should feel like unboxing a new phone. Nobody hands you a wiring diagram with a phone. You take it out, you can tell what everything is, you plug it in, it works. Same performance, same compatibility, same engines — a much shorter distance between "package arrived" and "engine running."

Old vs new

The wiring is the whole story

Everything else in this update matters, but this is the change you'll feel first.

Before: you had a set of leads and no map. You compared your parts against a video frame, guessed, checked, second-guessed, and often left the engine sitting on the bench overnight rather than risk connecting something wrong. For a lot of first-time builders, that was where the project quietly ended.

Now: the connections are obvious from the parts themselves. Each lead has one place it goes, and it's clear which place that is before you plug it in. No diagram, no paused video, no forum thread. You connect it the way you'd connect a charger — because there's only one sensible way for it to go.

That's the entire point of this upgrade. Same engine, same performance, same compatibility. What changed is that the last twenty minutes of the build stopped being the hardest twenty minutes.

  Previous version Upgraded version
Identifying parts Similar-looking components, easy to mix up Parts are distinguishable at a glance
Wiring & connections Guesswork. Match your parts against a video and hope it's right Each lead has one obvious home. Plug it in and move on
Mounting Aligning engine and ignition hardware took fiddling Mounting holes pre-machined for the ignition accessories
First start Often a second session, after asking for help Realistic to reach the same day you unbox
Suits Builders who already knew the platform First-time builders and experienced builders alike
What it costs you Nothing extra. The upgraded SEMTO and TOYAN V8 starter kits are listed at or below the price of the versions they replace. This was not a price increase.
What's upgraded

Four products, and how to order the right version

Each product page has a version selector. Choose the option labelled New Version or Upgrade Version — the older versions stay listed so anyone replacing a part on an existing build can still match what they have.

Base · Inline-4 & V8

Aluminium alloy base — TOYAN FS-L400BGC and TOYAN V8

One base, two engines. The same upgraded base fits both the FS-L400BGC inline-4 and the V8, so if you own both — or plan to — this is a single part, not two. Mounting holes for the ignition accessories are machined in, so the engine and the electronics sit where they belong without improvising.

Starter kit · V8

Starter kit — TOYAN V8 FS-V800WGPC

The complete starting package for the gasoline V8: spark plugs, CDI ignition modules, fuel tank and line, water tank and line, three-way nozzle and radiator support hardware — reworked so setting it up doesn't require reverse-engineering somebody else's photo.

Base · Twin-cylinder

Metal fixing base — SEMTO ST-NF2 and TOYAN FS-L200

The twin-cylinder base gets the same treatment: holds the engine steady while it's running, and looks right on a desk when it isn't.

Starter kit — SEMTO ST-NF2 (nitro/methanol)

The ST-NF2 is the engine most likely to be somebody's first engine, which made this the most important kit to get right. It's also the clearest example of what we mean about pricing: the upgraded version lists below the standard version it replaces.

Not yet · Inline-4

Starter kit — TOYAN FS-L400BGC

An upgraded starter kit for the inline-4 hasn't been released yet. We'd rather say so than let you wait on something without a date. Until it arrives, the current 4-in-1 igniter kit is the correct one to buy — in stock and fully supported.

Fuel options

Running your SEMTO ST-NF2 on gasoline

This question comes in often enough to answer directly. If you own the nitro/methanol ST-NF2 and you want gasoline, there are two routes.

Convert the engine you already own

The gas conversion kit does exactly that, and it's available now.

Or wait for the factory gasoline version

A gasoline twin-cylinder is planned for release around September–October. The exact date isn't locked, and we'd rather tell you that than promise a day we can't hold. Release news will appear first on the engine listing below — where the nitro version is also in stock and shipping now.

Questions

Common questions

I already own the old starter kit or base. Do I need to buy the new one?

No. Nothing you own has stopped working, and we still stock and support the previous versions. This upgrade is about the first setup — if you're past that point and your engine runs, you're not missing anything.

How do I make sure I receive the upgraded version?

Use the version selector on the product page and choose "New Version" or "Upgrade Version." If you've already ordered and aren't sure, email us your order number and we'll confirm which one shipped.

The FS-L400BGC base and the V8 base look identical. Are they the same part?

Yes — one base, two listings, so builders searching for either engine can find it. If you already own it for one engine, you don't need a second one for the other.

Is the upgraded version more expensive?

Not for the starter kits. Both the SEMTO and TOYAN V8 upgraded starter kits list at or below the versions they replace. Current pricing is always on the product pages.

I'm stuck partway through a build. Can you help?

Yes. Email service@stirlingkit.com with a photo of where you are and which kit you have. A photo saves everyone a round of guessing.

One last thing

None of this happened because we had a clever idea. It happened because people took the time to tell us what wasn't working, and kept telling us until it changed. That's worth more to us than a five-star rating.
