ENJOMOR GS-L4 36cc Inline-Four Engine: Setup & First Start Guide

The ENJOMOR GS-L4 is a 36cc water-cooled, 4-stroke DOHC inline-four gasoline engine with oil pump lubrication, CDI ignition with distributor control and a brushless starter motor. This guide walks you through getting your GS-L4 running for the first time, from unboxing to first start, carburetor tuning and shutdown.

Before You Begin

The GS-L4 inline-four ships as the engine only. To run it, you will need the following.

Available from Stirlingkit

Please source locally

  • Gasoline: 92 RON or higherEquivalent to 87 AKI or higher at US pumps. Use pure gasoline; do not mix oil into the fuel.
  • Engine oil: standard automotive engine oil0W-20 or 20W-50 both work. Added separately through the valve cover.
  • Coolant: standard automotive coolantUse it straight from the bottle, no dilution needed. Do not use tap water.
  • Batteries: 12V (CDI ignition and radiator fans) and 24V (starter motor)
  • Tools: hex key set and Phillips screwdriver

Batteries, fuel, oil and coolant are restricted items for international shipping, so we're unable to include them with your order. All of them are easy to find at hobby shops or auto parts stores.

Safety first: Run the engine outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames. Never start the engine without coolant and oil in the system. Keep hands, clothing and cables away from the belts, pulleys and output shaft while the engine is running. Always shut the engine off, disconnect power and let it cool before refueling.

Setup & First Start

1

Check the Package List

Unpack your GS-L4 from its crash-proof flight case and confirm the contents:

  • ENJOMOR GS-L4 engine model × 1 (with pre-installed bracket and 4 ME8 spark plugs, 1/4-32 thread)
  • Manual × 1
2

Install the Water Pump

Mount the water pump to the front of the GS-L4 engine and tighten the mounting screws evenly. The water pump circulates coolant through the cylinder block and head.

3

Install the Water Pump Drive Belt

Fit the drive belt over the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley. The belt should sit snug without being stretched tight, because an overtight belt can snap after a few minutes of running.

Turn the crankshaft by hand through a few full turns to confirm the water pump turns with it and everything rotates smoothly.

Do not remove or adjust the timing belt. The toothed belt on the red camshaft pulleys drives the GS-L4's dual overhead camshafts (DOHC). It is pre-installed and timed at the factory.

4

Install the Exhaust Manifold

Bolt the 4-into-1 exhaust manifold to the cylinder head, tightening the bolts in a cross pattern so all four exhaust ports seal evenly.

5

Connect & Fill the Cooling System

Remove the yellow plug first. Every GS-L4 is test-run before shipping, and the yellow plug seals the coolant outlet so that leftover coolant doesn't leak in transit. Pull it out before connecting the hoses, and keep a cloth underneath, as a small amount of coolant may still come out.

The GS-L4 is water-cooled, with coolant passages through the cylinder block and head.

  1. Using the coolant tubing from the cooling set, connect the water pump fittings, the radiator and the coolant tank into a loop, but leave one hose off the engine for now. Push every hose fully onto its fitting and secure each joint with a zip tie or hose clamp. A hose that slips off while running will overheat the cylinder head within seconds.
  2. Place the coolant tank beside the engine, keeping it away from the exhaust.
  3. Pour coolant into one of the engine's coolant fittings until it runs out of the fitting on the other side. This pushes the air out of the water jacket.
  4. Connect the remaining hose, then fill the coolant tank to about two-thirds full, leaving room for expansion.
  5. Wire the radiator fans. The two fans are wired in parallel: red to positive, black to negative, on a 12V supply. They can share the 12V battery with the CDI, so no extra battery is needed.

Have the fans running before you start the engine. Don't wait for the temperature to climb.

Check the coolant level again after the first run. The level usually drops a little once the pump has pushed the remaining air out of the system.

6

Add Engine Oil

The GS-L4 uses independent oil pump lubrication, so oil is kept completely separate from the fuel. Add about 40mL of engine oil through the filler on the valve cover. Never run the engine without oil.

7

Connect the Fuel Tank

Fill the fuel tank from the cooling set with 92 RON or higher gasoline and attach the fuel line to the carburetor inlet. Check the line for kinks or loose ends, and route it away from the exhaust manifold.

Wiring Overview

The GS-L4 uses two separate power systems: a 12V circuit for the CDI ignition and radiator fans, and a 24V circuit for the brushless starter motor through the 80A ESC. Use this diagram as a reference for Steps 8–10.

8

Connect the CDI

The GS-L4 fires its four spark plugs through a CDI ignition with distributor control, triggered by a hall sensor. Plug the CDI unit from the cooling set into the ignition leads and the hall sensor wire.

9

Connect the Batteries

Turn the speed controller knob to the low end before connecting the 24V battery. Otherwise the starter motor may spin as soon as power is connected.

Connect the 12V battery to the CDI. Connect the GS-L4's brushless starter motor to the 80A ESC, then connect the ESC to the 24V battery. Keep all wires clear of the belts and pulleys.

Do not reverse the ESC polarity. Red goes to positive, black to negative. Reversed polarity destroys the ESC instantly, with no warning beep, and is not covered under warranty.

10

Connect the Speed Controller

Plug the ESC signal lead into the speed controller (labeled "Servo Tester" on the packaging). Its indicator light should come on, along with the CDI light.

The speed controller runs on 4.5–6V only. It draws power through the ESC signal lead. Never connect it directly to the 12V or 24V battery, or it will be destroyed immediately.

The speed controller only sets the starter motor speed. It has nothing to do with the throttle, and no servo is needed.

11

Prime the Carburetor & Start the Engine

The GS-L4 carburetor has no choke lever. To draw fuel up to the carburetor, you cover the intake with your thumb while turning the engine over.

  1. Switch the radiator fans on.
  2. Set the throttle lever on the carburetor just above idle.
  3. Cover the carburetor intake with your thumb.
  4. Turn the speed controller knob up to spin the engine over for a few seconds, then back to the low end. Repeat until you see fuel reach the carburetor.
  5. Take your thumb off the intake and turn the engine over again. The engine should fire.
  6. As soon as it fires, return the knob to the low end and let the engine settle at a low throttle setting.

If the engine doesn't catch, return the knob to the low end and wait about 10 seconds before trying again. Don't try more than 5 times in a row, so the starter motor and battery can cool down.

Keep your thumb clear of the belts and pulleys, and take it off the intake as soon as fuel reaches the carburetor. Too much priming floods the cylinders.

12

Tune the Carburetor

Let the GS-L4 warm up at low throttle. Adjust the carburetor needles in small increments until the idle is steady and the engine revs up cleanly. Build up engine speed gradually; the GS-L4 is rated for a maximum of 12,000 rpm. Every engine settles slightly differently, so take your time with this step.

Break-in: for the first few runs, keep the GS-L4 at low to moderate engine speed and run it in short sessions, letting the engine and coolant cool down fully between runs. Avoid high rpm until the engine has settled in.

13

Stop the Engine

There are two ways to stop the GS-L4:

  • Cut the power: disconnect the CDI ignition battery and the engine shuts off immediately.
  • Run out of fuel: the engine stops on its own once the fuel in the line is used up.

Let the engine cool completely before handling hot parts or storing it.

Troubleshooting

GS-L4 won't fire on first start
  1. Check all ignition connections between the CDI, the hall sensor and the 12V battery.
  2. If the connections are good but there is still no spark, the hall sensor may be faulty. Replace it with the spare sensor included in the cooling set. You can swap the sensor without removing the distributor or the distributor cap.
  3. Remove the ME8 spark plugs and check them. A wet plug means the cylinder is flooded; dry it, turn the engine over a few times with the intake uncovered, then try again.
Starter motor doesn't turn at all
  • Check that the speed controller is connected and its light is on.
  • Check the 24V battery charge and the ESC polarity.
Starter motor turns but can't spin the engine over
  • Turn the speed controller knob up a little.
  • Check that the 24V battery is fully charged.
Coolant temperature rises quickly
  • Shut the engine off right away and let it cool.
  • Check that the radiator fans are running.
  • Check the coolant loop for air bubbles or kinked hoses.

FAQ

What do I need to buy to run the GS-L4?

The engine ships on its own. The Water-Cooled Radiator Cooling Set is available from us and includes the radiator, tanks, CDI, ESC, speed controller and tubing. You will also need to buy two batteries (12V and 24V), gasoline, engine oil and coolant locally, because these can't be shipped internationally.

Which engine oil should I use?

Any standard automotive engine oil works. The website lists 0W-20 and the paper manual lists 20W-50; both are fine to use.

Is the GS-L4 available as an unassembled kit?

No. The GS-L4 currently ships fully assembled only.

Can I get 3D CAD/STEP files or a digital manual?

These files are available to customers who have purchased the engine. After ordering, contact service@stirlingkit.com with your order number and we will send the digital manual and a 3D STEP assembly file for reference.

Can I buy a replacement water pump assembly?

Yes. The complete water pump assembly is available separately through our GS-L4 replacement parts page. You can also browse all GS-L4 parts here.

Does the GS-L4 come with an oil filter?

No. The engine doesn't include an oil filter, and it isn't required to run. An oil filter is available separately as an optional upgrade that helps keep metal particles from the break-in period out of the oil.

The belt broke after a few minutes of running. What should I do?

Contact service@stirlingkit.com with your order number and a photo of the belt, and we will send a replacement. When you fit the new belt, keep it snug but not tight. Overtightening is the most common cause of early belt failure.

Still stuck? Email service@stirlingkit.com with your order number and a short video of the issue, and our team will help you get running.
