Otto's four-stroke engine
Nicolaus Otto builds the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine — intake, compression, power, exhaust. Almost every car engine since runs this cycle.
1886
Carl Benz files German patent DRP 37435 for a three-wheeled vehicle with a single-cylinder four-stroke engine of roughly 0.75 hp — widely recognised as the first purpose-built automobile.
1888
Bertha Benz drives 106 km
The first long-distance automobile journey, made without telling her husband. It turned a patent into a product and proved the machine could leave the workshop.
1908
Ford Model T
A car designed to be repaired by its owner. The moving assembly line follows in 1913 and the price collapses — the automobile stops being a rich man's machine.
1932
Ford Flathead V8
The first affordable mass-produced V8, cast as a single block. It creates hot-rodding, and with it the whole idea of modifying an engine.
1990s
DOHC and fuel injection become normal
Twin cams, four valves per cylinder, electronic injection. The 2JZ and RB26 come out of this decade and never leave the conversation.
Today
The combustion engine becomes a collectible
As cars electrify, the mechanism itself becomes something people study, restore and display — which is exactly where a working scale model earns its place.
