This is a beautiful piece of mechanical art that works beautifully, but with some challenges, especially if you use it with the base. Here are the challenges and how I was able to solve them:
1. Coolant expansion; The plumbing on the base does NOT allow for expansion of the coolant as it heats up. If you run the engine past a coolant temp of 39 degrees C, you risk one of the coolant line connections blowing off under the pressure because there is no place for the expanding coolant to go. I added a 1 L aluminum expansion tank I found on Ebay in the line. It will mount on the base using the mounting holes and screws for the throttle, which doesn't work on this engine anyway. This solved that problem, but disclosed the next issue.
2. Weak coolant pump; The coolant pump on this engine is weak. Once I hooked up the expansion tank I could not detect any movement of the coolant through it. I purchased a 1-2 PSI 12 volt gas pump from Amazon and spliced it in line between the expansion tank and radiator. This moves the coolant through the system well and solved this problem. One tip - don't buy the ones on the site. Their connections are sized for tubing the size of the fuel lines, and are too small for the coolant lines.
3. The next I haven't solved yet. Oil leaks at a very slow rate from between the oil pump and oil pan. It LOOKS like there is no gasket between them, but tech support says there is an O ring there. I have snugged the oil pump mounting bolts down as far as I dare given the threads are in aluminum, but I still have a small leak. Still trying to figure this one out.
