The Untold Story of the World’s First Car (And the Woman Who Drove It First)

Back in 1886, Karl Benz officially patented the world’s first car. The only problem? He was utterly terrified of it.

His very first prototype test drive had ended in a glorious, unmitigated disaster when he plowed straight into a brick wall. Mortified, Karl became the town recluse, refusing to ever test the machine in daylight. To the locals, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen was just a noisy, farting metal monster that sent horses bolting down the street. With a pathetic 0.75 horsepower—meaning your bathroom blow-dryer has more kick—and a blistering top speed of 16 km/h, passengers frequently had to hop out and push the thing up hills.

While the inventor was having a full-blown mental breakdown in his workshop, his wife decided to take the wheel. Literally.

The Most Chaotic Road Trip in Human History

Long before that legendary drive, Bertha Benz had already saved the project once by liquidating her dowry and selling her jewelry to fund her husband's endless experiments when they were completely broke. But financing it was one thing; getting a skeptical world to accept it was another.

In the summer of 1888, tired of her husband's hesitation, she didn’t ask for permission. She grabbed her two teenage sons, wheeled the contraption out of the garage behind Karl's back, and embarked on a 104-kilometer cross-country voyage.

It wasn't a Sunday drive; it was a masterclass in survival:

  • The world's first gas station was a pharmacy: There were no gas pumps back then. Bertha had to pull into small-town apothecaries to buy Ligroin—a heavy-duty cleaning solvent meant for washing clothes and greasy machinery—to keep the engine chugging.
  • Emergency fixes with everyday accessories: When the fuel line clogged, she cleared it with her hairpin. When the ignition wires sparked and shorted out, she tore off her stocking garters to use as electrical tape. Because the primitive water-cooling system had no radiator, she spent the entire trip hunting down village wells just to keep the engine from melting.
  • The accidental mechanic: When the wooden brakes completely burned out on a downhill slope, she pulled over at a random cobbler’s shop and made him nail scraps of leather onto the blocks. Just like that, she invented the world's first brake pads and accidentally turned a local shoemaker into history's first-ever auto mechanic.

By the time she rolled back home, she had single-handedly dragged the automobile out of the lab and proved it was a legitimate machine.

Build the Legend for Yourself

Without Bertha cashing out her dowry to fund Karl's obsession, and without her dragging a smoking, bucking three-wheeler across the German countryside with a hairpin and a prayer, the modern car might never have happened.

If you love the gritty, raw charm of early engineering, you don't just have to read about it.

The Teching Benz Patent-Motorwagen Model Kit shrinks down the exact mechanical marvel Bertha drove. Packed with over 400 precision components, it features a working replica of that legendary horizontal engine, moving gears, and the unmistakable three-wheeled frame.
