How to Prime the CISON V8 Oil Pump Before the First Start | Stirlingkit

Last updated: October 2026 · For the CISON V8-OHV-44 PRO V1.1

Thank you for choosing a CISON V8 engine from Stirlingkit!

This guide shows you how to prime the oil pump and check the oil lines on your CISON V8 engine, step by step. It follows the CISON V8-OHV-44 PRO V1.1 manual (p. 11, 13, 27 and 46), with advice from the Stirlingkit support team.

Why it matters: on a brand-new engine, the oil passages are empty. Until they fill, the pump has nothing to push, so oil may not reach the lines even when the starter spins fast. Priming fills the passages before the first start, gives the moving parts oil from the very first turn, and confirms every oil line is clear. It only takes a few minutes.

Quick answer

  1. Prime before the first start. Push clean 4T oil from the oil pump outlet into the block with a syringe.
  2. Light resistance is good: the passages are clear. Firm resistance usually means a tube is kinked or a hole needs clearing.
  3. Oil pan: 25ml of 4T 10W-50. The fuel tank takes pure gasoline.
  4. While building, check the #80 oil rail holes, tighten the #36 bolt gently, and keep the oil tubes free of kinks.

✅ These are normal on a new CISON V8 engine

  • No oil in the lines on the first cranks. The passages start empty, so a brand-new engine needs priming first. It doesn't mean the pump is faulty.
  • The oil filter is wet but the lines are dry before priming. Oil has reached the pump area and just needs a push through.
  • Light resistance on the syringe while priming. That's the oil filling the passages.
  • A little oil from the exhaust and some light smoke on the first few runs, while the piston rings bed in. It clears as the engine runs in.

Which oil, and how much

Where What How much
Oil pan 4T engine oil, 10W-50 recommended 25ml
Fuel tank Pure gasoline, 92/95 octane (no oil mixed in) As needed

The CISON V8 runs hot, so the manual recommends a high-viscosity oil (p. 46). More oil isn't better: overfilling the pan can push oil past the rings and out of the exhaust.

While you build: four checks for a clear oil system

1Check the #80 oil rail is clear

The #80 oil rail carries oil along the V-valley to lubricate the camshaft. Before you fit it, look through every hole against the light. If any look partly closed, a quick puff of compressed air or a fine wire clears them.

2Fit the #36 bolt gently

The #36 bolt holds the oil rail in place, and oil flows through its hollow centre. That makes it slimmer inside than a normal bolt, so tighten it until it's snug, then stop. You'll find it inside the small white tube in your kit.

3Fit the oil lines without kinks

  • Cut the silicone tube to the right length: long enough to reach without stretching, short enough not to loop or fold.
  • Push each end fully onto its fitting.
  • Check the tube doesn't kink when the covers go on.

4Turn the oil pump by hand

Before fitting the pump, turn it by hand. It should turn smoothly and evenly. If anything feels rough or uneven, send us a photo or short video and we'll take a look.

If you need to take the pump pulley off, use a small puller rather than pulling it by hand, and re-align the gear with its D-shaped hole before refitting (manual p. 28).

How to prime the CISON V8 oil pump

Do this once the engine is assembled and before the very first start.

  1. Fill a syringe with clean 4T engine oil.
  2. At the oil pump outlet, inject the oil into the engine block.
  3. Feel the resistance as you push. Light, steady resistance means the oil is flowing through the passages. Firm resistance usually means a tube is kinked or a hole needs clearing: just go back over the four checks above.
  4. Reconnect everything and fill the oil pan with 25ml of 4T 10W-50.
Why it works: priming fills the oil passages, so the pump has oil to push from the first turn instead of starting dry. It also doubles as a test that every passage is open.

Quick fixes if oil isn't reaching the lines

No oil in the CISON V8 oil lines, even with the starter spinning fast

This is normal on a brand-new engine: the oil passages start empty. Prime it with a syringe as described above, then try again.

CISON V8 oil filter is full of oil, but the oil lines stay empty

Also normal before priming. Oil is reaching the pump area but not yet being pushed through the passages. Prime from the pump outlet into the block. If the syringe meets firm resistance, check the #80 oil rail holes, the #36 bolt and the oil tubes for kinks.

The syringe won't push oil through the CISON V8 oil lines

Usually a tube or hole just needs a quick check. Work through it in order: the oil tube (kinked or squashed?), the #36 bolt (fully seated, hole clear?) and the #80 oil rail (holes clear?). If everything looks right and oil still won't go through, send us a photo and we'll help.

The CISON V8 oil pump feels rough when turned by hand

Don't force it. Send us a photo or short video of the pump and we'll help you check it.

A little oil and smoke from the CISON V8 exhaust on the first runs

Normal on a new engine while the rings bed in. Check the oil pan holds 25ml and isn't overfilled.

Common questions

Does the CISON V8 oil pump need priming?

Yes, before the first start. Use a syringe to push clean 4T oil from the oil pump outlet into the engine block. This fills the oil passages so the pump doesn't start dry, and it also tells you whether the oil lines are clear.

How many turns does the CISON V8 starter need before oil comes through?

On a dry system, cranking alone may not bring oil through, even at full starter speed. That's why priming matters: once the passages are filled with oil, the pump has something to push straight away.

How much oil does the CISON V8 take?

25ml of 4T engine oil in the oil pan, 10W-50 recommended (manual p. 6 and p. 46). Don't overfill. The fuel tank takes pure gasoline, with no oil mixed in.

Do I need to prime the CISON V8 oil pump every time?

No. Prime it before the very first start, and again if the oil system has been drained or taken apart.

Is a little oil from the exhaust normal on a new CISON V8?

Yes, on the first few runs. The piston rings are still bedding in, and it improves as the engine runs in. Keeping the oil at 25ml rather than overfilling helps. See our piston and ring guide for ring order and direction.

Oil still not moving?

Send us a short video of the syringe test or the engine cranking, plus your order number. We'll help you find where it's stopping.
