My Personal Experience of Starting HM-01 Hit and Miss Engine Kits | Stirlingkit

I want to share with everyone my most recent purchase from Stirlingkit.com, the HM-01. This engine took 4 months to develop and design and is truly a masterpiece and work of art. The engine comes in two configurations, a kit where you can assemble the engine on your own or a pre-assembled kit.

I have to say that I was very impressed with the manual that was included with this engine. It was very detailed with step-by-step procedures on how to assemble the engine. As I put mine together I came up with some creative ways to configure the wiring to make it have a clean-looking installation and then I was able to make the engine idle a lot slower to give it that unique hit-and-miss sound that these engines typically have.

One of the things I did to hide the wiring of the ignition contacts was to make a notch in the wood to route the wires underneath the engine. I drilled another notch in the middle of the rear wooden spacer to run the wires to the back of the wooden box. To hide the spark plug wire, I drilled a small hole in the bottom corner of the wooden spacer located towards the rear of the engine as shown in the picture below. The engine has a hole in the front where you can put the spark plug wire through.

For my power source, I used a battery box for 4 AAA batteries. This gave me a total of 6 volts to power the electronic ignition box. I added a toggle switch on the back of the box to cut off the power to the ignition and turn off the engine.

To slow down the engine and increase the time it spends before it fires again, I simply changed the spring on the flywheel with one that had less tension. If you do not have a spring you can stretch the one it brings little by little until it achieves a nice slow idle.

I am super excited with how well this engine performs right out of the box. It fired up right away without any adjustments to the carburetor. I like the fact that it has a glass lubrication cup for the piston and two cups to lubricate the bearing. The engine brings a pull string to start it but can also be easily started by hand. If you are debating about getting one, I would say get it right away and don’t hesitate because the engine will surely not disappoint you. I enjoy running my engine and admiring how it runs and the mechanics behind it all. This is honestly one of my favorite engines to date.
