Structure and Working Principles of the Rotary Engine

Although the structure of the rotary engine is different from the traditional four-stroke piston engine, it also has a classic four-stroke working mode: suction-compression-work-exhaust.
The core difference is that the traditional four-stroke piston engine can do one work in two revolutions, while the rotary engine can do three times in one revolution. The power density is much higher than that of ordinary four-stroke piston engines, leading to high fuel consumption.
In addition, because there is no complex crankshaft, traditional intake and exhaust valves, camshafts etc., the rotary engine can have a very small volume, and has little vibration  and run smoother during operation because there is no reciprocating linear motion of the piston.

What's Chinese 2110 truck rotary engine?

In the 1960s, when the rotary engine first came out, many people were very optimistic about the future of the rotary engine, thinking that the rotary engine would replace the piston engine. Because the rotary engine can do work three times for one revolution, and the general four-stroke piston engine can do work once every two revolutions. Therefore, many car companies have participated in the development of rotary engine vehicles. For example, in 1965, Rolls-Royce obtained the authorization of the diesel version of the rotary engine, developed the R series engine, and planned to use it in its company's military products. General Motors of the United States has also purchased the authorization of the rotary engine, and Citroen has also established a joint venture company with NSU to develop the rotary engine and assemble it on its own mass-produced cars. And Mercedes-Benz is even crazier. It has developed a 0.6L four-rotor engine that can reach an astonishing 370 horsepower. In the rotor tide of that year, many international brands have developed and manufactured rotary engines.

 

 

In the 1960s, because it was generally believed that rotary engines would soon replace piston engines, China decided to independently develop rotary engine vehicles. So Tianjin began to develop the rotary engine truck TJ140. In 1969, the twin-rotor gasoline engine 2110 was successfully developed, mainly used in 4-6 ton trucks and buses. Engine 2110 is a 2.2L dual-rotor structure that can output a maximum horsepower of 120hp and a maximum torque of 280N.m.In November of the same year, China has succeeded producing the world's first TJ140 truck equipped with a rotary engine, which was two years after Mazda's proud first rotary-engined model, the Cosmo Sport. It was said that TJ140 reached 140km/h maximumly, but the main problems of this car are high fuel consumption and loud noise. Now it seems that the high fuel consumption is a congenital deficiency of the rotary engine, and the high noise is a problem of the Chinese assembly technical process at that time. From 1969 to 1971, due to some reasons of the year, only 40 TJ140 trucks were finally produced, and the 2110 type twin-rotor engine mounted on the TJ140 truck was only produced less than 100 units, and finally did not fall on the stage of history.

However, in 1975, Chinese car companies began to develop rotary engine cars again. Two years later, China's first rotary engine car was successfully trial-produced in Shanghai Automobile Factory, named SH750. This is a four-door sedan, with straight lines that were popular in the 1970s, and the C-pillar and trunk line slumped down, creating a sense of style that belonged to that era. It is said that the purpose of Shanghai Automobile Tractor Research Institute in designing this car was not just a product. Their deep purpose was to form a design center, technology center, and trial production center through the research and development of SH750, and to establish China's own automobile research and development center. system. Therefore, the design of SH750 adopts a formalized process from design drawings to models. However, because Shanghai Automobile Works has already designed an improved SH760A of the SH760, the more advanced SH750 has not been put into mass production. Although this is a pity, the design and manufacture of SH750 have cultivated a group of automotive talents. Later, many Chinese leaders and backbones of Shanghai Volkswagen and Shanghai GM Pan-Asia Design Center came from this institute.
