A hit-and-miss engine is a type of four-stroke internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to operate at a set speed. It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire ("hit") only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing ("miss") when they exceed their set speed. This is as compared to the "throttle governed" method of speed control. The sound made when the engine is running without a load is a distinctive "POP whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh POP" as the engine fires and then coasts until the speed decreases and it fires again to maintain its average speed.
Features: 1, STABLE STRUCTURE:The engine can be disassembled and can be used for DIY , the structure design is stable, and the surface has anti-rust treatment. 2, SIMPLE OPERATION:Place the engine on a lug boss, leave the wheel in a suspended state, inject gasoline or diesel or kerosene into the single cylinder, and then manually rotate the wheel (may take two or three attempts) and the engine will start. It is very convenient to observe the principle of the engine. 3, PRIORITY GIFT OPTION FOR MANY APPLICATIONS:The engine has a wide range of application as, great gift for teacher’s Demo props on the class, birthday gift for friends, families, parents, etc. or can be used as home or office ornaments.
I run it off of methanol and top end lube with a little scent added to help regulate the temperature, when compared to gasoline methanol works better with it having a fuel mixer. It can run for over an hour straight with a full tank of methanol. I plan to make a mini homemade ice cream maker with it. great engine for someone that loves a good deal
Good product. This item is very good to me. Very good to my needs. I am very satisfied to this product.
This is great!
very well made great engine. Takes a bit of work to get it going, but the patience paid off. I made a starter drive to fit on my rechargeable drill, it helps enormously with the starting.
Not so good
The engine appears to be well machined but keep in mind that if you break something or something wears out that parts are not available. Mine never ran quite right to begin with. There was a leak with the exhaust valve which I managed to fix. Recently the engine was dropped damaging the head beyond repair. I cannot find a replacement cylinder head. I sent an email to Stirling but have not heard back so basically junk at this point.
My husband loved it!
My husband was thrilled to receive this as a Christmas gift. He has been "tinkering" with it since opening the box. I was really happy with the purchase.
I expected this purchase to be fun.... big disappointment...
According to the web page description this item... has a luminous gyroscope?... has removable & interchangeable parts... has a bulb that lights up... and comes with an extra flywheel & allen key. That's all great and sounds like a fun item, but in reality: the "gyroscope" does not light up - I suspect a dead battery, no extra flywheel was included & no allen key was included, so there is nothing to remove & interchange, the engine can barely generate 2.5V - so the 5V bulb is never going to lite up. Oddly after a few minutes of running this engine now does not even work. It does need to heat up before running but now even after 5 minutes of direct flame this engine just won't run. I can only post 1 video so I cannot show the "dead" engine. Overall I can't give this more than 1 star for the overhyped description & missing parts
The engine received was not the one shown on the website
This engine runs very well, the problem is that the engine they sent does NOT match the item in the picture. I specifically wanted a thermo stirling engine with an "extended" hot tube. What they sent was the standard "short" hot tube variety. I already have 2 engines of this style, if I wanted another I could have purchased the one from this site for $23.99 or $19.99. Instead, I paid $29.99. If Stirlingkit no longer have this item in stock, they should UPDATE their website pictures and ADVISE the customer accordingly. This is very poor business practice on the part of Stirlingkit to make an unauthorized substitution. I have been very satisfied with my other purchases from Stirlingkit up until now
Well I have built this little engine was fun to build took me from 11pm to round 7 am the next morning as I was taking my time going to put it on a stand then start it up just waiting for the stand/base for it
A nicely packed kit love how the box is wood and everything is packed in black foam trays instructions are online but the contents are in plastic box’s. Like screw’s nuts and everything else needed to build it
I sent you an email describing my research and asking to speak with your engineers about reversing the rotation. I have had no response. I am a retired electrical engineer researching chirality and Tesla's concepts on Aether and gravity.
