what should the carburator be set at for the first start?

When starting the engine for the first time, tighten the main oil needle and then back it out two turns. After starting, listen to the sound. A dull sound indicates rich oil. Turn down the sound at this time. A sharp sound indicates lean oil. Open the oil needle larger. The speed adjustment process cooperates with the damper.

What's These UNEXPLAINED EXTRA PARTS of HM-01 engine?

Extra bag labeled, "Machine Screw 3*6" containing what appears to be qty=2 set screws of unknown size - not machine screws as labeled - these screw sizes are not identified on the BOM or drawing detail.  See photo for detail.
>>Please identify their use?  Are these substituted different sizes for the above missing part # 039, M3*4 set screws?

Extra bag labeled "screw 2.5*6" containing qty=6 screws not identified on the BOM or drawing detail.   See photo for detail.
>>Please identify their use?  Are these BOM # 037 and why different than the below bag of what I assume is also BOM # 037?

Extra bag labeled "screw (new) 2.5*6" containing qty=6 screws not identified on the BOM or drawing detail.   See photo for detail.
>>Please identify their use?  Are these BOM # 037 and why different than the above bag of what I assume is also BOM # 037?

Extra bag unlabeled containing qty=1 rod not identified on the BOM or drawing detail.   See photo for detail.  Is this a gap measuring/setting rod as noted on page 28 of the manual for checking for a 1.6-1.7 mm gap?
>>Please identify/confirm its use?

There is an unidentified wiring harness found in the ignition parts pack that is not identified on the electrical schematic or any information.
See attached photo.  Note the ends of all three conductors were sealed together on the end opposite the t-connector.

11. Could you help please. What is the easiest way to get the tapered collet and wheel off the drive shaft. I forgot to put the steel balls in the key way. Or will it be ok without them in

 12. i ordered and received a retrol hm-01 hit and miss motor. upon opening the box i noticed that the speed controle lever was not attached to the motor, there was a spring and black mount attached to the lever. i can not find any instructions on how to install the lever. the wiring and plug seem to be in good shape. can you please point me in the correct direction to get this resolved. i can send pictures of the speed control lever if needed

13. Why doeshm-01 have a battery? Does it not use a flame source to heat the water? If it’s using electric power it’s technically a motor not an engine LOL.

The battery is used to power the igniter. The igniter is an electronic igniter.

3 Modifications done so far on the HM-01 hit and miss engine:

1). Ignition timing has been retarded bringing ignition closer to TDC - this helped allow for much slower running speed from stock and has greatly reduce kickback at slow cranking speed.

2). Softer spring for governor mechanism - allows for slower speed running.

3). Softer push rod spring - to reduce the frictional loading on the engine so slower speed operation can be maintained.

My new HM-01 has NO compression. Seated valves, still nothing. Piston “with o ring” will slide out of cylinder just by the weight of the connecting rod. Tried spare “O” ring, same thing. Are there any larger sized “O” rings that I could purchase ????

I am struggling to find the part I need for my Retrol HM01. I live in the uk.
I need a threaded pin to go into the aluminium arm which moves the arm in and out of hit and miss action.

To remove the tapered sleeve find a single edge razor blade holder that you can tap with a very small hammer. Remove the 3 screws and place the razor blade edge between the flywheel and sleeve and tap the holder turn the flywheel 180 deg and tap again..should do the trick

New at this but if you trim some black electric tape just the width of the o ring groove and place it in the bottom of the groove. This will raise the compression.. I went 2 layers but maybe start with one and see if it helps

How do you remove the tapered sleeve on the governor side flywheel once it has been tightened in?

  • Gene Havens: February 06, 2024

Just purchased this engine. There is minimal compression even with moderate oil on piston “o”ring
Has anyone had this problem? Is there a remedy?
